When is the right time for baby casting?

Foot and hand baby casting (also referred to as lifecasting) helps parents to catch and retain the time when the baby was young. New parents can make a 3D model of the baby's tiny hands and feet using basic materials (alginate and plaster) to create a keepsake to cherish forever.

It's really very easy to build a cast for life. There are only two steps that are important.

One: Create an impression mould

The first step is the use of Impression Making Powder to make a mould of the hand and/or foot of your infant. Alginate is the most widely used mould making ingredient for the production of both professional and DIY life casts, based on seaweed. Even on fragile newborn skin, it's absolutely safe to use.

Two: Render the Cast with the Alginate Mould

This bit couldn't be easier: just pour plaster into your impression mould of alginate and you have your baby life cast once the plaster has set. Fine baby casting plaster (such as Plaster of Paris), which is one of the cheapest types of casting plaster, is in some casting kits. These cheaper plasters have a short shelf life of just 6 months and once mounted. They are quite a soft plaster, which means it's not ideal for an object that's going to be treated and you want to last forever. Besides, when you remove your hand cast from the alginate mould, you don't want to take off a pinkie!

Lifecasting for babies

You will want to cherish every second of your precious little bundle as a new parent. They're growing so fast, aren't they? You just want to stop and enjoy the moment, but seeing them grow and evolve and become little people is also great fun. Lifecasting lets you catch the moment in time. Photographs are wonderful, but lifecasts allow you to actually touch those memories and keep them closer.

Why is this the right moment now?

There could be plenty of explanations. There is never a wrong time to catch a moment with a lifecast. It's a great way to celebrate a special anniversary or milestone, but in fact, every day we have should be treasured. Not just special occasions.

Why could waiting be a better thing?

It can be a smart idea to do them at various ages if proud grandparents are still eager to have different age lifecasts and keepsakes. If you wish to take newborn baby castings, they should wait for your baby to be 6 months old so you can measure them to see how they have grown.
